OMG! Check out the 17 banned movies in India by Censor Board

Bollywood is attaining new heights day by day and is known to be the largest film industry in the world in terms of a number of movies released in each year. There are movies which sometimes are blockbusters, sometimes goes average, and also accounts to flop list which is nothing short of stupidity. Also, there comes a certain category of films which are purposely kept away from our reach.
These selective banned movies in India showcases the sensitive issues or the content which is not appropriate for the young generation.
Compared to some of our films, often it is not involved in displaying bold and sexually explicit things, abusive language, political overtones, Kashmir issues, religion, and gender taboos, which is facing the sensor’s displeasure.
Check out the list of films banned in India by Censor Board in no particular order.
1. Gandu 2010

Gandu is a Bengali movie picturized in black and white was a film directed by Qaushiq Mukherjee and was not passed by the censor board as the name of the movie in itself says a lot. This controversial cult film was banned due to its oral sex scenes and nudity.

Sins is one of the bold movies that are banned in India. A Vinod Pande’s directorial film which is about the Kerala priest (Shiney Ahuja) who falls for a young woman (Seema Rahmani) and gets sexually involved with her. The story revolves around obsession, lust, and his struggles with the society he lived in. The film was not passed by censor board as it had issues with the nude scenes in the film.
4. Black Friday 2007

The film, Black Friday by Anurag Kashyap was another sensitive issue which was based on the true story of the 1993 Bombay Bomb Blasts by S Hussain Zaidi. The movie was concluded to be too dark to be released by the censor board. The movie was also faced the stay order from The Bombay High Court and hence it adds in the list of most controversial films in Indian cinema.
5. Paanch 2003

Paanch is a crime thriller film by Anurag Kashyap which faced a lot of torridity from the Censor Board and hence it accounts in the list of banned movies in India. The film is waved around the Joshi-Abhyankar serial murders in Pune in 1997 having violence, vulgar language, and drug abuse. The film never got a home-video release but after some cuts were cleared in 2001. However, it could not be released as the producer faced some difficulties.
6. The Pink Mirror 2003

The Pink Mirror is a movie which raises the gender issues which is a sensitive and a touchy topic. The film is directed by Sridhar Rangayan which assays the concept of trans-sexuality. The story was of two bisexuals and a westernized gay teen trying to seduce a straight and handsome man. The Censor board found it vulgar and banned it, despite the film received rave reviews at film festivals around the world.
7. Kama Sutra- A Tale of Love (1996)

This film is a deceitful story found offended by the Censor board as the story tangled ‘explicit’, ‘unethical’ and ‘immoral’ factors for the audiences, showcasing the concept of Kama Sutra! This erotic film is directed by Mira Nair depicting the lives of four lovers in the 16th century in India. The film was a hit in the eyes of audiences with critics too but turned out a fallout by Censor Board and finally got banned.
8. Fire 1996

The movie is directed by Deepak Mehta which faced a lot a applause worldwide but failed to influence the Hindu Groups specifically Shiv Sena in India due to its controversial subject. The film was on a lesbian relationship of two sisters-in-law in a Hindu family. The controversy turned dirtier when Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das along with their director Deepa Mehta started receiving death threats and Censor Board finally banning the movie in India.
9. Bandit Queen 1994

A Shekhar Kapur movie, based on the life of Phoolan Devi was found offensive with filthy language, nude scenes, explicit sexual content. The Censor Board ultimately didn’t find it something that should release.
10. Mohalla Assi 2015

The film is a satirical one by Chandraprakash Dwivedi starring Sunny Deol (Sanskrit teacher and an orthodox religious priest) and Sakshi Tanwar (his wife) is banned by the Censor Board. The film is loosely based on popular Hindi novel Kashi Ka Assi by Dr. Kashi Nath Singh. The reason for the ban was its abusive language used by some established and respected actors like Sunny Deol and Sakshi Tanwar and the film was also leaked online before the film was hand-over to CB for certification.

11. Dirty Grandpa 2016

Censor Board banned this movie in India directed by Dan Mazer. The reason for its ban was the sexually overactive grandfather which the board didn’t find acceptable.
12. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the amongst the banned movies in India by Censor Board. The film was a ban for its unconcealed despotic inclinations and racist portrayal of Indians. Some part of the movie depicts monkey brains and black sheep of Kaali Ma being eaten as a delicacy.
13. Urf Professor (2000)

Urf professor is a Pankaj Advani film starring Manoj Pahwa, Antara Mali and Sharman Joshi which is also banned by CBFC. The movie plots the journey of the protagonist after hitting a man’s car and a winning lottery ticket goes missing and all the mess then follows. The CB was not convinced by the dirty scenes and abusive language used in this black comedy which resulted in the seal of a ban on the movie.
14. Parzania (2005)

Parzania is a film directed by Rahul Dholakia starring Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika in the lead roles. The film was a fine frame-up which revolved around a boy called Azhar who goes missing during the Gujarat riots in the year 2002. The film raised the sensitive issue of Gujarat’s scary past, and received repercussions and applauds hand-in-hand. Although the film won a National Award, its cinematic excellence was not found suitable enough for political parties to let it released in Gujarat, where it was violently banned.
15. Water (2005)

Water is another directorial work of Deepak Mehta which garnered a lot of controversy because of its dark drifts in the life of the Indian widow. Anurag Kashyap was the writer of the movie who took up the controversial issues like ostracism and misogyny which were not digested by the Censor Board. The movie faced the anger of protesters and around 2000 activists even destroyed the sets of the film.

16. Dazed in Doon (2010)

Dazed in the Doon is a film by Ashvin Kumar who directs the story of a Doon school, an institute which is one of the most highly respected schools of the country. The school had issues and was satisfied with the content of Ratna Pathak Shah’s coming-of-age movie Dazed in Doon which portrayed the story of a boy studying at the prestigious Doon School and the life he leads there. The school didn’t find it satisfactory spoiling the name and fame of it.
17. Unfreedom (2015)

In the list of banned movies in India, Unfreedom is a modern-day thriller by raj Ajit Kumar which narrates a lesbian love story entangled within an Islamic terrorism-related angle. The Censor Board didn’t find it appropriate with nudity and lovemaking scenes involved in it.
